Hair, Theoretical Design (2017)
Rather than a conventional blue and amber as stock warm and cool colors, I decided to go with purple and yellow. I thought that this would give the show a more dream-like feeling, a sense of unreality which I thought fit the mood of the show.
My general thoughts for the show also included the idea that sets would be done through projections on a single stationarybset, giving a psychedelic feel something like this.
Although I imagined them being more flowery than geometric.
This image is what I was imagining at the beginning of the show. The lights would shift as everyone begins to sing...
"This is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius!"
This is something like what the psychedelic flower projections would look like.
This is what the stage would look like at the beginning and end of the show.
And this is what the dawning of the Age of Aquarius would look like.
I designed a plot for Hair which would give me 25 focus points distributed across the stage in a 5x5 grid. Each area would be able to be lit from the front, the top, and one side. The five areas at center stage, running from downstage center to upstage center, could have been sidelit from either side. However, the ten areas on stage left could only have been sidelit from stage right, and vice versa.
For my design of Hair, I was allowed to imagine that I was able to use LED lights. Therefore, I only have a single light from each direction. At the time, I thought this would be sufficient, but with more experience, I would likely use additional lights as support, particularly from the front and top.
